Why car batteries go flat

01

Ageing battery - the silent killer

A standard 12V lead-acid battery lasts 3–5 years. As it ages, internal resistance increases and capacity drops - cold mornings or a few days unused push it below the threshold needed to start the engine. Our operator tests and tells you straight whether it's battery, alternator, or parasitic drain.

02

Lights left on & overnight drain

Leaving headlights, interior lights or a phone charger connected overnight can drain even a new battery completely. This is the single most common reason for a flat battery call-out - and keyless entry systems quietly draw current even when you think the car is asleep.

03

Faulty alternator not charging

The alternator recharges your battery while the engine runs. A worn alternator belt or failing alternator diode means the battery slowly depletes with every drive - you won't notice until it goes flat. Our on-site alternator output check catches this before it strands you again.

04

Cold weather & short journeys

Battery capacity drops by up to 40% at 0°C compared to 25°C. A 5-minute trip to the shops uses more power starting the engine than the alternator recharges. Combined, this is why flat-battery call-outs spike every January across all 27 cities we cover.

Expert insight - Why fixed pricing for jump starts

Why we charge £49, not a subscription.

The traditional UK breakdown model - £80–£120 annual AA or RAC membership - is broken for flat batteries. Most drivers pay that subscription for years and never use it. When they do, the average wait is 45–65 minutes because a single national control room in Cheadle or Bristol is dispatching one of the closest of 3,000 patrols. You pay for scale you don't need and speed you don't get.

TowManVan flips that model. There is no subscription. A local DBS-checked operator is dispatched when you open the app. Because we don't cross-subsidise infrequent users, the 12V jump start fixed price sits at £49 - roughly what a single AA callout costs when you've let membership lapse, but delivered 20+ minutes faster. Every operator carries surge-protected boost packs certified for modern start/stop, hybrid and EV 12V auxiliary batteries, plus a handheld battery analyser so you get an honest verdict on whether the battery, alternator, or a parasitic drain is the underlying fault.

What happens on a typical callout: you book in the app (60 seconds), your operator accepts and a live GPS track opens. On arrival the operator checks resting voltage, connects via the intelligent boost pack (reverse-polarity protected - safer than donor-car cables), cranks the engine, and runs a load test on the alternator. If the battery is end-of-life we'll advise a replacement rather than send you back out to fail again at the next cold morning. That entire process - from opening the app to being back on the road - averages 45 minutes.

Car would not start in a multi-storey at the Trafford Centre. I opened the app, put my floor level in the notes, and the operator found me with no hassle. Professional, quick and the price was exactly what the app showed.

Called the AA first - 65-minute wait. Cancelled, booked TowManVan instead and the guy was there in 24 minutes. Same job, half the wait, no annual membership. Won't bother with the AA again.

My Tesla's 12V battery went flat in the NCP on the Headrow. I was worried no one would know how to handle an EV but the TowManVan operator came prepared and knew exactly what to do. Great service.
